Build some
breathing room.

A reserve cannot prevent the surprise. It can give you more choices when the surprise arrives. Start with your real essentials—not somebody else’s perfect budget.

Start with the four numbers that shape this cushion most.

The number is only the beginning.

A month of breathing room can feel very different when work is seasonal, someone you love may need help, or cutting spending would make life less safe. Use the first answer as a place to begin, then try the version of a hard month that could actually happen in your household.

Worked example. $12,000 accessible savings and $4,000 of monthly essentials equals 3 months today. A 6-month reserve is $24,000; the $12,000 gap would take $1,000 a month over 12 end-of-month deposits.
How this works + sources

Runway is accessible reserve divided by the spending amount you enter. The CFPB says the right amount depends on your situation. The FDIC cites six months as a common rule of thumb—not a universal command. This tool uses your target and assumes no savings interest.
